Happy Canada Day!! For those in Newfoundland and Labrador it’s also Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is significant in Newfoundland history. On this day in 1916, members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment went over the top at Beaumont Hamel on the first day of the Battle of the Somme – straight into the gunfire of German soldiers. The following day, only 68 soldiers answered roll call. 324 had been killed and 386 were wounded. It was one of the greatest losses to the Dominion of Newfoundland.
I’m proud to be Canadian and a Newfoundlander! ❤🇨🇦
